Tignes - France's exlusive ski resort

Ski Area - Coaching - Qualifications - Town - Accommodation - Upgrades - Support Team - Photos - Course Diaries - Intranet Support - Equipment - Travel Info - How To Book

Tignes is one of France’s most popular ski resorts, and its most snow sure. Not only does Espace Killy offer a direct connection to the pistes of Val d’Isere, but the glacier enables the ski area to operate throughout the year.

Backcountry terrain that is accessible from lift-serviced pistes is out of this world!  And with a wide open sunny valley and a down to earth vibe you're never to far from seeing the latest trick or itght line pulled.

Tignes - Our Pick of the Best!

- First lift up the Grand Motte on a powder day - unadulterated bliss all the way down...

- Tree runs in Le Fornet, when all other snow is tracked

- Drinks and dancing ski-boot style - in the Folie Douce in Val d’Isere

- The OK run all the way, a warm-up if ever there was one

- Pizza and pastis for lunch down in Le Breviere

- Off-piste in Le Fornet, pillow after pillow of powder and not a soul in sight

- The bumps under the Tommeuses if you don’t mind a vocal audience

France's Premier Resort

tignesmap128.jpgNamed after Jean Claude Killy, local hero and winner of 3 Olympic Golds in the 1968 Olympics, Espace Killy covers over 11, 000 hectares of snow fields and 300km of groomed runs.

It also has two parks equipped with half pipe, the only double bowl in France, big air, hips, hand rails, boarder cross, and a multitude of small and medium tables.

Tignes hosts the first FIS European Downhill of each season and regularly receives between 6 and 10 meters of snow each winter. On-piste, Tignes boasts some superb and technically challenging skiing. Famous runs include La Face, Orange and OK from the top of Bellvarde.

Powder and vertical are never far way, particularly if you venture through the tree runs up at Le Fornet or down the steep couloirs of Le Grande Motte, making Val D’Isere one of the most complete resorts in Europe.

COACHING

- French & British coaching offering an open-minded international approach to snowsports

- Includes ski school experience, tactical and psychological sessions, freeride and freestyle

- 5 full days per week with 1-to-1 coaching, video analysis and formal feedback reports.

- That's over 30 hours training per week

BASS & The Development Centre

bcg33.jpgAll the instructors we work with are BASI 4 and actually examine for BASI. Steve Rickets heads up BASS in Tignes and Colin Tanner heads up The Development Centre.

Between them they have a wealth of knowledge and experienced BASI instructors and have a record that is unparalleled in training people for their BASI instructor qualifications. BASS and The Development Centre are ideal ski schools to provide a focused and knowledge based instructor course.

Whether it is preparing you for your BASI exams or developing your technique in your personal skiing, the personal attention and the ability to communicate to each individual client is unique.

Colin Tannercolintanner.jpg

Colin is fully qualified through the BASI and the New Zealand systems, and before starting the development centre, taught for Evolution 2 in Val d’isère for four years. Colin is a BASI ISTD instructor with full French equivalence.

He has been a BASI trainer for the last 4 years and an examiner for the NZSIA for 7 years. With an insatiable appetite for ski coaching, Colin spends his summers in New Zealand, where he has worked for the Coronet Peak Ski school for the past 11 years.

Renelle Mortimerrenelle70x70.jpg

Renelle is one of few women to be recruited onto the BASI Snowboard training team. From her snowboarding beginnings in Thredbo Australia she was completely hooked and her snowboarding career developed rapidly.

With a contagious love for nature, her patience, unique qualities and natural teaching skills suit Base Camp down to the ground.

The Eurogroup Countries

In order to be fully qualified to instruct skiing in Europe you have to pass the Eurotest (a timed GS race) in addition to having your ISIA license (for BASI instructors this is the Ski Teacher or 'BASI 2').

This usually takes a year or two to achieve but you can instruct with your 'BASI 3' in the meantime whilst you train.

BASI

basibadge.jpg

The British Association of Snowsport Instructors is the national governing body for ski and snowboard instructing in the UK. BASI is a member of the ISIA and Eurogroup and it's ski & snowboard qualifications are the most widely accepted in Europe.

The BASI system is split up into 4 levels (1 being the easiest), each becoming progressively more difficult. To become a ski or snowboard instructor you need to pass two examination courses: a 5 day Level 1 Course and a 10 day Level 2 Course.

Both courses are included in our European instructor programmes and develop an understanding of BASI's Central Theme, the structure of snowsports in the UK, the principles of teaching and the technical elements of skiing or snowboarding.

TOWN

Tignes

tignes_le_lac.jpgThe skiing in Tignes is particularly impressive, but the town will not disappoint. Tignes has a slightly more relaxed vibe than neighboring Val d’Isere, but still manages to be exciting and cosmopolitan.

Located 3 hours from Geneva, Tignes is popular with serious skiers and boarders from all over Europe and the UK. The reliable snow, great off piste and world famous parks attract a varied and eclectic crowd.

The old town of Tignes Les Brévières is linked both by lifts, and a 24hr bus service, to Tignes Les Boisses, Tignes Le Lavachet, Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret, and each station has its own collection of bars, restaurants and clubs.

The Jam Bar normally fills up right as soon as skiers start to come off the mountain, and Loop Bar varies between laid back après and crazy madness when Espirit throw a party there – head to Alpaka for sofas, an open fire, and Wi-Fi internet.

Tignes clubs vary – try the Melting Pot for great tunes, especially following big events, the Dutch Yorin FM Club, where you can dance to Eurobeat all night long, and the Grotte du Yeti for live bands, with a compressed air cooling system for the ear splittingly loud sound system.

If its shopping you’re after, there are Billabong and Quicksilver outlets or check out Concept Pro Shop and Bazoom for Freeride Gear, or Intersport for anything else. Tignes Le Lac now has an indoor pool and you can go ice skating, snowmobiling and even snow kiting.

ACCOMMODATION

tignes_town.jpgOur apartments are located in the centre of Tignes Le Lac, 5 minutes walk to the slopes and on the high street.

The apartments are comfortable, private and secure. They all have their own entrances within a larger residence that also provides ski lockers, a communal area and staffed entrance foyer. Apartments are fully equipped and furnished and have self-catering facilities. Apartments typically sleep 4, with 2 sleeping on sofa beds in the studio lounge area and 2 in a bedroom or walk-through bedroom.

The kitchenette opens onto the lounge where there are dining and seating facilities and there is a large balcony or sun-terrace in each apartment. Bathrooms have a shower/bath, sink and toilet and there are cupboards and shelves for storage. Water, heating and electricity bills are included as are sheets and bedding.
