If you’re new to the sport, your instructor will begin by introducing you to the equipment and showing you how to catch and ride a wave – whilst understanding the importance of safety and how to be aware of your surroundings. For intermediate surfers, your instructor will analyse your style, technique and wave selection – and take things from there.

Instructor Course
Length: 5 weeks
Start Date: September
Location: Harlyn Bay, Cornwall, UK
The Course
This 4 - 6 week course combines serious professional training on beaches in Cornwall with exciting excursions to different surf locations to give you valuable experience. At the end of this course you will gain Surf Instructor and Beach Lifeguard qualifications which will enable you to work on any beach throughout the world. The culmination of the trip will be a week long trip to a European surf camp.
During the course you will receive supervised hands on surf coaching experience working with one of Europe’s most dynamic surf instructor teams. These sessions will provide you with an opportunity to put into practice all of the skills you have learnt in the classroom and will help prepare you for your instructor assessment. Coaches will use video analysis for in depth reviews, and you’ll be able to use a variety of demo and test boards, with the option of getting your own customised board made at special exclusive rates for the group.
This programme is quite physically demanding, with fitness training geared to getting you through your NARS Beach Lifeguard Course, which will include rescue techniques and first aid training. Remember that surfing itself is an excellent form of exercise, and that you’ll be spending hours in the surf every day.
Workshops, day trips and community service are all parts of the course – you’ll learn about the anatomy, sizing and source of a wave, board repair and maintenance and beach safety. You’ll help the local community by teaching surfing to local schools as training and helping with community beach cleans, and you’ll surf a variety of local spots other than Harlyn including Fistral, Polzeath and Croyde.
If all this wasn’t enough, in your last week you will take advantage of the time of year and travel either to France or Northern Spain to surf some epic breaks, staying in fully catered, ideally located accommodation.
Prerequisites: The course would suit anyone fit, energetic and up for a challenge. We ask that you already have some basic surfing skills under your belt and be able to paddle out in 2 – 3ft surf conditions.
Post Course: With your newly acquired qualifications you will be able to work as an instructor or beach lifeguard on a beach anywhere in the world
