Live Facebook Q&A : How to become a ski or snowboard instructor

On the 19th of March we went live from Méribel to chat about how you could become a ski or snowboard instructor.  During the session we talked about a number of different elements to consider when becoming a ski or snowboard instructor.

A few of the things we covered were:  How good at skiing/snowboarding do you need to be to become an instructor? Are there any other requirements in order to become a Level 1 or 2 Instructor? What’s the process for qualifying? When qualified where can you work? What can you expect to earn? Plus more…

The Panel?

Gwilym Thomas  – Lodge Manager, BASI Level 2 Snowboard
Gwil is our Meribel Mountain Lodge Manager having managed all of our courses in Val d’Isere for the last two year. He holds a BASI 2 SB Qualification and is our go to man on any BASI Snowboard related advice. Gwil also helps run our Surf Trips in the summer and when not riding you’ll always find him hunting for a sweet shot with his camera.

Heledd Thomas – BASI Level 3 Trainee –
Heledd joined Ticket to Ride and Basecamp last year to sit her BASI Level 2 Ski. Having worked as a Ski Instructor in Austria for 2 seasons prior to this she felt that BASI opened up more international opportunities for her. Since completing her Level 2 with Craig Conkie and the rest of the BASS Program, Heledd returned to Meribel to join the Basecamp Level 3 Program. She now works as our Basecamp Rep and BASI Ski Advisor alongside her training. She’s also Gwil’s sister.

Craig Conkie – BASI Level 4 ISTD, Trainer Assessor –
Head Instructor for the British Alpine Ski School (BASS) in Meribel. Craig and his colleagues train all of our clients year upon year, helping them pursue their dreams of becoming instructors and pushing people to the next level in fun and safe environment. A BASI Examiner and having done more seasons than most Basecampers have had hot dinners, he holds a plethora of knowledge on what it takes to progress through the BASI Levels and become a fully qualified instructor in France.
