Overview

WHISTLER

Whistler Mountain is a bike riders Mecca. With 200km of purpose built trails, slopestyle parks and dirt jumps, it could very easily lay claim to the best lift assisted riding in the world. Located in the British Columbia Mountains on the West Coast of Canada, just over two hours from Vancouver, Whistler offers world beating biking for riders of all levels with a huge graded trail network – suitable for everyone from families and beginners right up to the biggest names in professional freeride and downhill, who make Whistler their summer home. What is more, Whistler isn’t only limited to the Bike Park; it can also be used as the perfect base from which to ride the north shore trails of Squamish and Pemberton, and for more adventurous forays into Heli-biking and even road trips to Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island.

THE TOWN

Whistler is one of the most international and exciting resorts in the world. Its village style and pedestrianised cobbled streets create a unique and vibrant atmosphere by day and by night. In the summer, there is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with shops and restaurants open until late, and a huge variety of bars and clubs to keep you going into the early hours. Summer activities are not limited to Mountain Biking; other activities include world class golf and fly-fishing, rafting, kayaking, para-sailing, bungee jumping, rock climbing, hiking, tennis and even windsurfing and volleyball!

OUR PARTNERS

ZEPtechniques has been involved with the coaching of mountain biking and training of instructors for over 8 years. Nestled right in the heart of Whistler itself, their programs, experience and coaches have all the expertise, professionalism and local knowledge to take your riding skills and confidence to the next level, whilst providing one of the most exhilarating and fun riding experiences you’ll ever have! ZEPtechniques’ coaches are true Whistler locals – these guys love to ride, know their stuff and live to pass on their passion and expertise to new riders and coaches alike.

CAMP INFO

These 4-week skill development camps include all disciplines of mountain biking (cross-country XC, downhill DH, freeride FR) providing the Whistler mountain bike experience of a lifetime, whilst ensuring the progression of your skills and confidence. Each discipline serves to help the other – a truly competent rider is one who can do it all, regardless of what or where they’re riding; this course will help make you become that rider!

Riders will be coached and guided 5 days per week, gain one-to-one tuition, video analysis & feedback and will each receive a ZEPtechniques Riding Techniques Manual; including all the theory, skills and exercises coached to you on the trails, thus maximizing the learning process. This camp is 100% practical based, riding five days/week and includes extra evening seminars such as Mechanic Classes and Riding Analysis & Feedback Video Sessions.

Week 1:
Date Programme Activities
Aug 1 2009 Riders will begin their “Six Skill Concept” training and development as they warm-up, explore and familiarize themselves with the local Whistler Valley x-country and freeride trails. The end of this first week involves riders being introduced to the Bike Park, its trails and the beginnings of safe, smart downhill riding. Bike fit and set-up, correct use of gears and brakes, climbing and descending, line selection and basic cornering techniques will all be covered. Possible trips (at extra cost) include Heli-Biking on Rainbow Mountain, Shuttle-runs on the hardcore trails of Pemberton, Squamish and Whistler Valley, and even a Bike Park road trip, taking in Silver Star and Kelowna Parks, as well as Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island.
Week 2:
Date Programme Activities
Aug 8 2009 Progressing on from the “Fundamentals” in week one, riders move onto more difficult trails and riding in both the Valley and Bike Park trails. Riders will be introduced to the “Essential MTB Maneuvers” whilst they progress with their skills to gain more confidence as they begin to ride some of the world-famous, Whistler trails. More relaxing sports might perhaps include world class golf and fly-fishing, hiking, horse riding, tennis and volleyball.
Week 3:
Date Programme Activities
Aug 15 2009 This week starts off with a “Whistler-Epic” as riders are guided over the knarliest, longest freeride and xc trails Whistler has to offer… 40 minutes descents, here we come! Rested up, they’ll spend the rest of the week in the Bike Park, where expert skills and maneuvers such as jumping, drops and high-speed cornering are introduced. Riders will also take in Pemberton's legendary North Shore style riding with a shuttle-day, and the option of a weekend trip to Silver Star Bike Park will also be offered (extra cost). Extreme sports in Whistler are in huge supply. Possibilities include Rafting, Kayaking, Bungee Jumping, Climbing, Zip-trekking, parasailing, and even windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Week 4:
Date Programme Activities
Aug 22 2009 Depending on the rider, week 4 will concentrate on developing more advanced riding skills - advanced braking, line selection, cornering techniques (think 'racing'!), larger drop-offs and ladder riding, as well as an intro to wall rides and 'steeps', and more advanced jumping and tricking. Park riding will be in the 'Garbanzo' section of the park, and the end of the week will be left open for riders to choose where they want to ride. Whistler has a legendary night life, that is just as active in the summer as winter, with loads of bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as a cinema, ice rink and indoor swimming pool. The bright lights of vancouver make for an exciting weekend excursion.
